Week 1 Task: Research on Ancient Cities, Present Cities and Future Cities.

In order to have a better understanding on how to plan a new city, I am assigned to do investigation on ancient cities, present cities and future cities.

Reseach One: Ancient Cities

Before get into the construction industry, it is crucial to understand the historical background of the building construction. As a result, I have chosen one case study which is the Ancient Greece as to further studies on its elements and components.

The Ancient Greece

- The ancient Greek architecture s best known for its temple, open-air theatre, monument and stadium.

- The buildings in ancient Greece can be classified into two types: Domestic buildings and public buildings.

- Domestic buildings mainly indicate the residential areas- a simple structure house with two rooms and an open porch.

- Public buildings are commonly the temples and open air theatre; or basically it is a space or building that opens to everyone.

- The city of ancient Greece is called 'Polis', often surrounded by a stout wall.

- Inside the city itself, it consists of elements like Agora (market), Acropolis (temples),  ampitheatre and altars.

Research Two: Present Cities

Japan is definitely a good example of present city due to its modernisation and globalisation. Aside from its modern architecture, there are also traditional builidings present in the city.

Modern Archictecture of Japan

- An eclectic mix of contemporary building styles can be seen in Japan, for example: the Olympic Stadiums (1964).

- The Tokyo International  Forum- a shiplike structure with glass-walled atrium, supported by elegant columns and bars, was built in 1996.

Traditional Archictecture of Japan

- A common house or known as 'Minka', traditional dwellings vary widely in their layout and appearance from region to region, often in response to local weather conditions.

- Mainly made largely of wood and paper.

Characteristics of Japan Architecture/City

- The city planning is well-organised.

- Culture and traditional buildings are kept during modernisation.

- Most of the buildings are eco-friendly.

Research Three: Future Cities

Future city is a imagine city that architects and builders usually think of based upon the advantages of citizen. Future city should have the basic elements such as variuosly, spiritual, instant, crater, floating, compact, oblique and continuous. I have chosen two type of future cities which are the New Babylon and the Concept City.

(A) The New Babylon

- An idea came from Guy Ernest Debord and Constant Nieuwenhuys in 1956.

- It is an urban proposition on a planetary scale.

- The city is basically linked to each other.

(B) The Concept City

- The transformation of a typical builiding into part of the natural landscape.

- In 1971, Gianni Pettena transformed a typical suburban house into ice house by covering with ice and clay.

- In 1978, Richmind Showroom came out with an idea which covers the buildings by using trees- BEST Products 1978.

Conclusion: From the research, I found out that every building is built on the advantanges of human itself. The world keeps on changing and improving. The buildings are mainly focused on environmental-friendly issues.
