19 th SEPTEMBER.
First visit to PKKHS
The site is located on one of the street, near Ara Damansara. The person in charge is nice. Her name is Ms. Pei Yu, a volunteer from the church nearby. She introduced us about the place and what the desperately looking for. A comfort space for kids to sleep well. We were told to install mosquito net for the kids' bedroom, and also we found out the space was way too dull and boring. Creating some alluring to excite the thinking of the children was one of the planning to be taken in consideration.
6 th OCTOBER.
Get the proposal done!
After some discussion done with another group we decided to choose the activities area (gym room) for further development. We started to talk over the problem they faced, listed them down and do our best to propose a solution to improve the environment within the budget. The first problem we got is the request from the organizer who concerned about children's health. Due to the rapid breeding of mosquitoes from the unorganized waste of the apartment behind this buildings, it caused major trouble for the children to sleep tight at night. So, as noted, a mosquitoes net is necessary for them.
Other than that, we think the activity area have to refurnish in a sense of aesthetic and also towards the function of that space. Cause currently, this spaces gives me a feeling like a jail, like it is set up for the teenagers with problem... NO, this is not what it should look like. Activities space, which they all would gather during free time, and this is the time they can show their potential, like basketball, chess, boxing, drawing and many more! This is the most important space for the kids' development. So, we work as a team, choosing the right color (red, to show passion), choosing the best design (boxer to evoke their inner potential), and choosing the most inspiring quote to make this space better!
13 th OCTOBER.
Get the ball rolling!
At this stages we started to plan everything well, just like calculations, material needed, cost needed, time management and also solutions. Collecting material is the hardest time for us as we have to keep everything in budget and provide as much benefit to the children. So, a good planning make the whole thing work. After proposal been approved, we started to research on the pricing of every material, the dimension, the amount required and the best solution to save the cost.
What I personal thought of the most interesting part in this session is how to bargain and deal with the 'tauke' of every shops to get a desired price. This really gives me a good chance as I can improve my communication skill and hopefully it can be applied in my future. After collecting all required stuff, we started to measure and cut them into pieces before bringing them to the site. As this required a lots of calculation stuff, preliminary work and hard labor work, my team and I went through a hard time to make sure the outcome fits what we expected.
27 th OCTOBER.
Interaction with community.
It is time to making thing done, It takes us around 3 weeks or more to complete the hard labor work such as removing the paints, repaint, assembling our stuff, laser cutting, rearrange the existing furniture and so on.
I had really gone through a good time with my team and also the kids in this session. We play, we fight, we work together as a team, making fun with each other, listen to the children, interacts with each other and even gone through every problem together to make the outcome works. I had to say, from mural painting on the wall to a small pieces of notes on the racks, they are not just a things or an object, they are our hard work, they are alive, they are the median we use to communicate to the children, to communicate with my fellow friend, it is our masterpiece of learning from each other, interacts with each other, and it will always be in my memory for my first meaningful act for the community.
29 th OCTOBER
Meaningful Dinner.
We are invited to a buffet dinner after our hard work done. In this session, it is our pleasure to listen to the teachers in the center, sharing their personal thought and also the tactics they do to educate the children. Experiences are the most valuable thing for me, there must be a reason why they had this organisation to help the community and the mystery at the back is always to be broken-hearted. I did learn a lot through their speech, like the way we look at others, everything got its own perspective of seeing things, it just differs from the person with different experience. It is like "to save them or to kill them depend on who you are. "
8 th NOVEMBER
Final TOUCH UP.
On November 8 my team decide to have a last visit to the youth center for final touch up, they refined the paint and rearrange everything into right position. They have a final interaction with the kids, writes small notes asking them to stay strong and saying goodbye to the children.
The reason I am writing 'they' instead of we, is because at that time I was admitted into ICU due to inflammation of the muscle around heart and causing muscle cramping. It was really unfortunately and disappointment as I couldn't have a look for what we did through those time and says goodbye to those kids. But by looking at the photos my friends took, that precious smile from every kids really warms my hearts even though we are not face to face interacting.
