PROJECT 1: COMPARE AND CONTRAST ESSAY
Students were assigned to prepare a compare/contrast essay on selected movie genre. In this project, I chose to do a comparison of similarities between two Science-Fiction films which were 'Attack on Titans' and 'Tokyo Ghoul'. My choice was interesting as they were both animated. Before we began our essay writing, Mr. Gopi asked us to do pre-writing and give us comments and advices.
comparative essay:
The history of anime begins at the early stage of the 20th century. It has a distinct genre which separates itself from the Western roots. In the 1980s, anime production was further developed and slowly being
accepted. This had then triggered a boom in production and increased its popularity worldwide. This
animated film is like an actual movie. It has an organised flow of the story, thrilling conflicts, pleasant
theme musics and motivational moral values. I have chosen to do comparison for the science- fiction films. It is a genre of conjectural fiction dealing with imaginative concepts and also the potential consequences of scientific and sophisticated innovations. Therefore, the two films that I am comparing in this essay are ‘Attack On Titans’ and ‘Tokyo Ghoul’. These two films possess several similarities in the aspect of settings,
themes, plots and characters.
First and foremost, the core similarity of both films are the fact that they are set in a world where
monsters exist everywhere. The film ‘Attack On Titans’ began with all humanities were forced to live insidethe cities surrounded by enormous walls. This was to avoid the invasion of the gigantic titans that ate
humans with seemingly no reason. These ginormous humanoids had impenetrable bodies and
overpowered strength that would eventually kill a human by just a single finger flick. In ‘Tokyo Ghoul’,
humanities were threatened by the invincible ghouls that desperately hunted and devoured human flesh. Humans were too weak and vulnerable to fight against the human- like ghouls that usually pretended to
be students, businessmen or other common occupations.
Moreover, both films possessed certain similarities in their themes. In ‘Attack On Titans’, the main
character, Eren, had revealed his willpower to survive under such a severe circumstance. He spent
majority of his time and ignored his survival instincts as to eliminate the huge humanoids that mindlessly consumed life. His will was a destructive one. He had portrayed the warrior’s will to sacrifice and risk his
life in order to protect his loved ones from being killed. In the other film, determination to protect those
who were important was shown when the protagonist, Kaneki defeated a sadistic ghoul who had
mercilessly tortured him. He realised his bad habit of easily trusting strangers had always led him to a life threatening situation and sometimes sacrificed his loved one. This had embraced his inner ghoul, awaken his strength and unlocked his true power. He wanted to protect and stop the endless killing.
Next, both of these films have some similar plots. For instance, their parents died and soon they were
recruited by a guild. In ‘Attack On Titans’, Eren witnessed his mother being eaten by a heartless titan. The
fire of revenge arose. He hysterically went out of control and almost got killed. Luckily, Mikasa, one of his childhood friend stopped him and successfully escaped to a safer place. He could not accept the fact of losing his beloved mother. In the age of 15, he joined the military with Mikasa and Armin. He had finally
graduated in the top 10 of the 104th Trainee Squad and then was recruited by the Survey Corp. In ‘Tokyo
Ghoul’, Kaneki’s mother died due to overworking when he was only 10 years old. He was then adopted by his aunt’s family but was unfortunately abused and nobody seemingly looked after or cared for him. After he grew up, he joined a ghoul association called Anteiku and he learnt how to live as a ghoul there. After he was kidnapped by a sadistic ghoul, he lost his memories and commenced his new life as a CCG’s
member who opposed and captured the ghouls.
Alongside with that, the protagonists from both of these films have the correspondences of their
characteristics. In ‘Attack On Titans’, Eren’s father injected a serum into his left arm which he believed was the responsible for giving him the ability to shift into a titan. This injection had triggered him memory loss, but luckily Eren was managed to survive. At first, he was not capable to control his strength and tended
to lose his consciousness. He soon got used with his impenetrable power after several tragedies. In ‘TokyoGhoul’, Kaneki was assaulted by a female ghoul. During her attack, Kaneki was wounded in the abdomen,
but steel bars fell on her and apparently killed her before she could kill him. Kaneki was then rushed to
hospital in a half- dead state. To save his life, Dr. Kanou decided to transplant the ghoul’s organs into him. From then on, Kaneki became a half- human, half ghoul creature. Although he gained back his life, but
somehow he was unable to live like a normal human anymore. He could not consume human food and
always had a strong desire to crave for human blood and flesh. Sometimes he even unconsciously
transformed into a ghoul.
In a nutshell, the above mentioned matters have clearly portrayed how similar the way these two films
presented. Both have exciting story plots, imaginative settings of story and distinctive background of the
protagonists. No wonder they have achieved high rating, countless awards and supports from their
audiences. Take your times to enjoy these films, and I believe you will definitely thrill by the story. Anime should widen its reputation worldwide and also to all ages but not only limited to teens. It might inspire
you, if you positively confront and learn from it.
